I really like the look and how the shelf folds down on the 590. What I am concerned about and as others have stated is that when folded down it leave the sheet metal holding the shelf sticking out. It's only time before it tears into the cover....

What we really need is a fitted plastic or rubber guard that can slip over the exposed corners when you put the cover on.
I decided to go to Homedepot and see if I could MacGyver something. I found two items that looked promising, plastic cordmate (found in electrical) and GB Gardner Bender Flex Tubing.

The cordmate did not work due to the angle of the bracket and the Flex tubing while it made the turn, would not stay on. I have attached pictures of what the shelf looks like when it is up and down, for those that don't own one.

I think what we need is something similar to what found on amazon, but made to fit to the shelf bracket.

I did find a couple possible solutions on Amazon, but have not ordered yet.

Edge Trim Black Small, 1/8" Fits Edge (10 Feet Length) $10.50 and also
Trim-Lok Edge Trim – Fits 1/16” Edge

Anyone else find a solution?

Not sure if this applied would allow the shelf to be lowered...
Thoughts?

I have not. I made my own front shelf. But I have used plastidip a ton and it was the first thing that I would use. It easy to use and if say for instance you need to remove it, it just peels off. It's very durable. You can make it as thin or thick as you like. And its cheap

If you choose to use it hit me up and I'll explain a good way to apply the spray.

The plastidip looks like any easy solution if you did not need to lower the shelf to put the cover on. But there is really not much space between the shelf and the bracket. So either the shelf would not lower or it would remove the plastidip. I will keep this in mind for future projects!
Thanks for posting.

Pretty simple fix: take some easily removable tape (frog tape, etc) and fix it inside where the shelf bracket hits the cover. turn the cover inside out. cut a couple pieces of leather 2" wide by 4" long. Smear some super glue on one side of the leather and put it on the inside of the cover where you marked the cover with the tape.

Hey Don,
Creative, but not really a fix. While the leather might fix a tear in that spot, since you have to lower the cover from the bottom to top other areas are going to rub.

I am going to buy some edging made for SS and see if that will work.

You could be right, I was hoping someone would try it and let me know if it worked :)

Hey Don,
No worries, input is good and the goal is to make a really good product better.

I don't see this being an issue because the horns hold the cover out over the shelf brackets.

Here's what mine looks like. I'm not sure how it happened, but I believe it was the wind. I first noticed it a couple days after a blizzard.

That is my concern!

I just placed an order on Amazon for product designed to protect edges. Cost was only $7.00 so I will give it a try, it should arrive on Thursday.

Gray edge trim small 0.375" U height x 0.039"-0.093" Grip range (5 Feet) This is gray edge trim that installs on the metal edges to protect it and to protect persons from the sharp metal edges.

My order came in today from Amazon!

I ordered edge trim that installs on the metal edges to protect it and to protect persons from the sharp metal edges.

The goal is to make sure that the shelf brackets do not tear my cover on the grill.

I cut the wrap and installed on both shelf brackets. The wrap is easily to remove and put back on. My plan was to remove it after each use and then apply when I wanted to put the shelf down and the cover on.

I did test putting the shelf up and down a few times and as you can see by the photo it wore off some of the rubber. So I bent out the shelf brackets a bit, but then the shelf would not stay up :)

For now I am going to see how long the wrap stays good. I purchased 5 feet, so I can just cut more wrap as needed. Or go back to my original plan and cut new pieces of the wrap and remove each time.

Overall this is a cheap fix and it will prevent my cover from being torn.
If you are interested, here is a link to amazon where I bought the wrap (Note cost is $7.75 for 5 feet).

Thanks Greg. Think I'll spring for it. Looks like it'll work
