Bull Internet connection through internet filter failing

I have an RT-700 grill and really like the WiFi feature that connects to an app on an iPhone! The issue I have is that my internet filter blocks some traffic which is required to load the app and list my grill. I have to disable my filter before I load the app and then after it is loaded, I can enable my internet filter again and everything works fine. What do I need to unblock in my filter to allow this traffic? Is there a URL or an IP address?

It could be your router is filtering by Mac address. See if this helps. If you capture the grill Mac address and add it to your routers allowed devices and that might get you set up. Let us know if this helps and good luck.

Maybe I didn't make it clear concerning where the filter is located. I have an internet filter app installed on my phone. If I disable the filter on the iPhone, it lets me load and use the app just fine. But if I have the filter app enabled on the phone, it seems to block something because it won't load my grill. Maybe I'm overthinking it...not sure what all your filter app is capable of...but in addition to possibly needing to add your grill's MAC address as an allowed device on your local network, you may need to know what service, port number, and/or transport protocol is needed for the app/grill to work/sync. For example, maybe it's using a simple Telnet on port 23 using TCP (or UDP). I know that's getting into the weeds a bit.

Mine works fine with my RT-700 and I've never checked the service/ports/protocol used. I have an AT&T owned router and I have somewhat limited ability to check those things in my router logs.

Another thought...use your cell phone to check your home wi-fi signal at your grill. Just make sure you're getting a decent signal. If you have a filter app on your phone, I'm gonna guess you know what I'm talking about.

Lastly, my RT app did not connect to my grill when I had an iPhone 6S+. Never understood it. Being an old networking guy I felt like I looked at it from every angle...with no luck. Interestingly, without knowingly doing anything different when I traded in and got an iPhone 12 Pro Max, it worked like a champ. It could have been something I had set on my iPhone 6 that blocked it from working. I have been known to do settings to try to be more secure and private on my phone and computers only to have it bite me in the butt. :)

Please keep us posted on any updates on this...I'm interested/curious.

Oops! I forgot to also mention that I use a VPN on my iPhone and that hasn't caused any problems. I wouldn't think it would but I did want to mention that in case that question came up. I am not doing any other filtering.

Yes, I understand what you mean when you talk about ports, services, etc. Do you know which ones are required to be open for the app to load/work?

No. I didn't see anything on the RT website when I looked last fall and, I haven't put a sniffer on my local network to check.

Don't understand any of that lingo, old school. Works sometimes and sometimes not. I rely on inkbird.

I assume it’s a web filter, to prevent porn, dangerous sites, etc on a child’s or family members phone (parental control).

If the grill works with it off, and doesn’t when it’s on then the issue is with the filter.

Why in the world would someone want to prevent porn?
Just asking for a friend.

Still wondering what this "filter" is on your phone.
If it works when the filter is off - you need tech support for your filter - not for the grill.
That’s my thought also. It sounds like the grill is connecting to the network just fine, but the filter is preventing the recteq app from phoning home to connect to their server.

I agree that the issue is caused by the internet filter but I just need to know what the recteq app needs to have opened to access the servers. I can then adjust the filter as needed.

I’d recommend @SmokeOCD suggestion to reach out to the filter’s support folks. Another option might be to see if the process can be automated with a Shortcut.

Sorry pal! This kind of stuff is way above my pay grade. I’ll be watching to see how things turn out. Good luck!
