When I clean my grill, I clean off the brown smoke stains from around the cooking chamber opening. I didn't want to apply the heat gasket to seal the lid. So I decided to apply some painter's tape around the opening as a test to see if that would stay attached and catch the smoke stains and I could just peel it off when I was finished. I only had the narrow tape for the test. It worked great. Pictures below. Also, it sealed around the lid, as there was very little smoke coming from the top of the lid and then pretty much none at all. I smoked meat for three days with the same tape on there and peeled it off the next day, once cooled. The tape I used was from the dollar store. I'm going to get some wider tape.

Seems like using the gasket as a one time shot is alot easier than masking the barrel constantly. Same end result.

What is the advantage?

Well, I don't want to put the gasket on. I'll get some wider tape and after I clean up my grill and prep it for the next cook, I'll quickly tape around the opening, foil the drip pan, and put a liner in the grease bucket. And wider tape will make it easier.

That’s a great idea. What did you use to clean the stains prior to adding the tape?
I use Real Lemon lemon juice. I spray it on and let it sit for a minute and then hit it with a green Scotch-Brite pad. Then I wipe it off with a paper towel. No need to rinse because it's not chemicals, it's food.

The question was not directed at me, but I have found that Bar Keeper's Friend keeps the cooking barrel stainless looking new. I use Weiman Stainless Steel cleaner on the controller shelf, hopper lid, & front shelf.

I just received 2 bottles of Cameo By Brillo today. Was recommended by Rec Tec, I’ll give it a try and see how it works out
