So, a question for you Christmas carnivores.....

Have meat prices gone up or am I just financially embarrassed? Actually, seems like all food prices have gone up roughly 30%.

I do all the grocery shopping for our household, and food prices are all up from say 10 months ago. However, the prices now, and I’m talking most specifically about meat, is a lot better today than it was around May-July. We had insane prices here, as much as $9.00 a pound for an ordinary chuck roast at the supermarkets... if you could even find one. Chicken was also very expensive and hard to find, now it’s usually available with nice weekly specials on some cuts.

I don’t like paying higher prices, but I thought the worst part of the 2020 food situation was the horrible produce quality I saw early in the summer. I was so glad when my own garden started to produce so I didn’t have to buy much. That seems to largely be behind us now as well.

My bride keeps track of such things whereas I only notice the total. We do most of our shopping at WM, Deb tells me she's not noticed much if any change in prices, other then the bump Greg mentions during the early stages of the pandemic.

What I noticed was the price of ribs at Costco. I seem to remember getting 3 racks for $20 something. Now the $20 something is $30 something.

My daughter works at one of the HEB Texas grocery locations and gets 10% off. But beef and chicken prices are crazy. I keep telling my wife I don't want the entire cow just a few pieces. But feels like I'm making a down payment on the herd. Hundreds of ranches around here. Might be better to negotiate for a full half.

I got a couple of NY Strips from Walmart and I think they were $9 per pound and not prime.

The only reasonably priced meat that I have found is pork chops at BJs.

I can remember not too long ago when whole chickens were 3-5 dollars
I picked up 2 today, $.99 a pound.

A couple of other items from today. I normally grind chuck roast to make my own ground beef and make my own ground pork from pork butt. These are pretty good prices, so I bought this instead. 80/20 ground beef for $1.99/# and a 2# roll of sausage for $5.79.

Your prices are lower than the D.C. area for sure.

Just for giggles I used bestplaces.net's cost of living city comparison tool and compared Berea, KY to Southwick, Ma, and DC. Groceries in Berea are 10% cheaper then Southwick's, and 18% cheaper then DC's.

I gotta move.

I wonder if that data has been updated? I can assure you food prices are not cheap around here.

I think I'm on a hamburger budget.... If I can find it on sale :D

Looks really good, enjoy!!

I didn't buy any. They had WAYGU hamburger meat too, I think it was $5.99/lb. I can't remember the price on the steaks, I think they were something like $30 or $40/lb. Still much better than our local BBQ store. They have frozen WAGYU steaks and each one is over $100. I just stick with the Costco prime briskets unless there is a really good sale on somewhere else. It has to be a big difference though because I can really tell the difference when it isn't a Costco prime brisket.

I did buy one of the WAGYU briskets during the summer to give it a try. It was a little better than the Costco prime but not double the price better.
