I heard on the radio today that there may be a pork shortage over the summer. Apparently there are supply chain issues, and demand will be high as people get back to gathering outside to barbecue.

Anyone heard something similar or have any insight?

I'd hate to see it, but no unforeseeable. Most have probably forgotten about the stories last year regarding producers of beef and pork having trouble finding markets for their product. I imagine quite a few, for economic reasons if nothing else, cut back on production. Chickens can be brought to market in a comparatively short window, 6-10 weeks. Pigs and steers take longer to ramp up. Could be an interesting summer.

Hog prices are WAY up.

Currently shopping for 1 ton of smoked pork loins for a May 22nd fundraiser. Can't get our supplier to commit to a price. He promises he'll have supply, just won't give us a price until a couple weeks before.

We paid about $2.35/lb last July for the same amount. He says to be prepared for mid $3/lb range.
