Wow! That looks very interesting. I’m guessing you had to drill the mounting holes in the barrel of the BFG, but that should be doable with a drill and appropriate bit + hole saw. I may have to look into this smoke generator as with the proper mounting hardware, I could use it on both the RT-340 and the gas grill (via the rotisserie mount).

Please do let us know how this works out. I like to smoke salmon and this would seem to be a great way to do it.

Was pretty simple to get through the body.. I used a Carbide hole saw with a cheap drill.. used some tapping fluid and it went pretty good. Thanks brother !

I’ve had my BFG for a couple of years and have been severely disappointed with the lack of smoke. This looks like a good solution. Don’t you find it sad to invest significant cash in the unit then have to modify it? Wish I had never purchased it.

Yea it is upsetting but I really needed something convenient (pellet smoker) with the space for large cooks.. this will make it a beast though.. and I’ll only be using wood chips with the generator so I’m hoping for a better smoke flavor

Have you tried a smoke tube before the SmokaI? Just wondering if there is much improvement in smoke flavor over a tube going this route. This does look pretty cool.

I do wish pellet smokers vendors would put a warning about the lack of smoke flavor on the box or their web sites, sure would save a lot of folks grief who expected more then these things deliver.

“Lacking compared to “? and I think it’s a losing proposition for the mfr. Piss off the user because you didn’t mention a wsm, maybe piss off a mfr because you compared yourself to them.
There’s no warning on a Chevy that it’s not a Mercedes or can’t tow like an international harvester. 😉

International Harvest has has been CaseIH for at least 25-30 years now, so you are showing your age! Back to the topic-if you want max smoke flavor, a pellet grill may not be your best choice. If you are anything like me who has often said here and elsewhere that a pellet grill gives you 80/90 percent of the results (from a stick burner) with only 10-20% of the effort, ,a pellet grill might be for you.

BTW, I own a ‘47 International pickup truck, bought new by my grandfather, 37K actual miles, passing it on to my son in March. it might also be clear that I also worked in AG, so I know a little, or more, about the history and players of CaseIH!

I’m thinking you miss the point. A pellet ‘smoker’ (or a stick burner for that matter) should produce smoke. We know a Chevy is not a Mercedes but a smoker should smoke. I bought a BFG and while I love the convenience it is a bit of a pisser to have to modify an expensive piece of equipment so that it performs adequately. I am hoping the Smokai solves the problem otherwise I am stuck with an expensive outdoor oven.

No I get it, I think most people got the analogy I was going for. How about ElCamino vs F350? Both American “trucks”, you bought one but actually needed the other to tow your yacht. Your BFG works 100% as designed. You’re throwing a blower on your ElCamino, so it can do the work the F350 does off the showroom floor. So I rambled, you’re no more satisfied now vs before. But if throwing a mod on there gets you to where you need to be that’s better than dreading every bbq for the foreseeable future.

So, are you saying that I need a ElCamino for good BBQ?

I have to chuckle at the endless smoke debate. It is an argument that will never be resolved to the satisfaction of the participants. And, I love the El Camino vs F-350 comparison; it pretty much describes the nature of the argument. There is no one smoker—or vehicle—that will appeal to everyone or do all jobs equally well. Not gonna happen.

I’ve used everything from stick burners to electric smokers and—yes—they are all different; just like Fords and Chevys (or Rancheros and El Caminos) or F-350s and 3500s. You just go with what does the job you need done. Trying to turn one into another is a futile endeavor. Just ask me how easy it was to stuff a Chevy 350 into a ‘40 Ford coupe.

If you like heavy smoke, you need a stick burner. You can get moderate smoke from a pellet grill (and get some sleep doing it), but it will never be a stick burner. Smoke tubes can help, but they still don’t match a stick burner. And, I suspect a smoke generator as discussed in this thread may help close the gap, but it won’t overcome it.

What I do like about the smoke generator concept is the ability to cold-smoke. For those who smoke cheese, fish, etc. that could be a great addition.

I would recommend instead of chips, use wood chunks and charcoal. I have the smokedaddy magnum PIG on my Bull which is esstenially the same thing you have. When I use chips, I tend to get too much white smoke. My smoke generator works best getting white hot charcoals filled up 50% or more and then add a wood chunk or two.....rinse and repeat. Just a suggestion but play around with it. Just what I and others have found what works best for quality extra smoke.
