RecTeq turning off app remote start up feature?

What is pretty obvious is that actual cooking-related posts have dropped off significantly here since the remote start fuss kicked off.

I have been perusing some other forums lately in search of what I’m primarily interested in; grilling and smoking posts/threads. I may be ancient, but am still capable of walking to the grill and pushing the start button.

My interest is in seeing how others actually prepare and cook protein. That seems to be a pretty radical approach for some here lately. And, yes; the ignore button has been used on occasion when the noise level got too high.

From what I have seen here and on other sites /social media, MANY STILL do not understand why people are upset about this. I'll attempt to help a little. ( Some are my views some are others*)

I'm not sure what percentages of customers fall into each category but it doesn't matter, they are customers all the same*

Some really are disappointed they cannot start their smoker remotely anymore this is true...and for various valid reasons. ( Timed cooks, start it from work ,save time, on and on.)
But convenience is probably, imo, the least of the issues. Anyone can push a button instead.

Now we move on to actual selling points and price... Many spent their hard earn money on Recteq, Because it DID advertise this function (they wanted) and that function was figured into the price. Let's say we are buying a new vehicle and we are told it has AC ... Your AC works great when you need it, but then someone comes along as tells you its being turned off for a safety" reason. (Ozone? It doesn't matter). Now do you take it back because something they promised was taken away? Or do you keep it because everything else is still great about it? Do you get any money back for what you paid for being taken away ? (NO).

Let's move on to "Gov't overreach"
MANY believe this goes to far making decisions for individuals that are MORE than capable of controlling their own lives and surroundings.
Perhaps they should decide what is "safe enough" for themselves. They could sign wavers responsibility clauses...pay a fee ??? It doesn't matter , the freedom to choose should be theirs.. ( its a smoker not a nuclear warhead)

Finally, trusty worthiness of the company. (I have talk with them personally ) You've spent your money and gave your support to a company you believe in. Company reps/owners begin by telling everyone "we don't want to do this, the powers that be are forcing us ". Meanwhile, refusing to name the party responsible . (Why?) Scared of backlash?
( Possibly) next ,no official public statements. Owner says "they couldn't because it got leaked out"
( likely true) until a CR is shown telling everyone "no Govt involvement, RT ( we ) did it for safety reasons"... ( again covered by saying, the rep wasn't aware yet, they hadn't been informed ) ??? Huh ??
Finally a statement that they agree with the safety concern. Well, which is it ? You didn't want to do it ,you were forced ? Or you did it on your own and used the "powers that be" as an excuse ?

So you could see where mistrust may have come in over the disastrous mishandling of the situation. No matter what the truth is. This also tends to make people think "ok they did this, what's next? "

So there are some of peoples concerns I have seen and read in one post. Hopefully people can respect and see others opinions and views.
This is about MORE than if.... "Someone has to get off their lazy-ass to push a button".

It doesn’t matter “Why people are upset about this;” it is a done deal! If people no longer “trust” RecTeq, then it’s time to buy another brand. I won’t even get into the “government overreach” conspiracy.

Spending endless bandwidth beating a dead horse won’t revive it. And, endless attempts to “explain some people’s concerns” won’t change anything either. It is what it is.

Sorry.

@Jim6820 i am with you, let’s get on with the smoking and cooking. In the HD world we say Screw it Let’s Ride!

It's no conspiracy and we live too far away from each other to meet at the bar and discuss it.

I'm grillin' pork steaks today on the kamado and braising them in the oven for 30 minutes in bbq sauce.
It's not on the recteq but at least it's bbq.
I make it a point to never discuss politics with people I’d like to remain friends with. 🤣

The pork steaks on the Kamado sounds great.

Well said. However one feels about this, it’s a done deal. Let’s cook something great!

Good point. Friend asked me today how I liked my pellet grill, I said I liked but wouldn’t recommend. Can buy cheaper. I’ve bought my last rec teq

You lie in the bed you make, and you reap what you sow. Everything is just unicorns and rainbows here in the good ole USA, everything is a conspiracy and nothing to see here.......shut up and toe the line.

I was very hesitant to jump in on this discussion because I haven’t been on the forum in 2 weeks and mindful of what Jim6820 said earlier. But here’s my take on it…as a retired cybersecurity professional.

It’s more than possible that the RecTeq servers have either experienced an issue or the risk is high with their servers, that handle our apps when cooking/plugged in, that could result in a third-party with bad intentions turning on grills at random. In and of itself, that may not be horrible. But if even one fire was started by those actions, RecTeq will be legally liable or at risk of liability for damages…and worse if someone is hurt or killed. So this could simply be a case of eliminating this liability. This could very well simply be a CYA effort.

My scenario isn’t so far fetched as you might think. With people doing their banking, putting their home security and appliances and such online to manage remotely, and other online activities, this will be a much sought after target of those with bad intentions. We call them attack vectors. Everything you do or put online creates another path. Be careful for your own sake.

I hate to be a contrarian but how the H can you allow me to remote start my car from anywhere on the planet, roll the windows up and down (potentially trapping an arm, leg, or head in), remote start the fireplace in my house, and do just about anything I want with a smart plug that is connected to a portable heater, and sell me on this idea. If we want to play the what if scenario, what if the same do good gardner accidently bumps the power button with his rake when the cover is on? What will they do to prevent that from occurring? I guess they can take away the button altogether and replace it with a charcoal briquet basket and cut the cord completely off the unit or disable the controller! Sorry for my rant but this makes no sense. The same house with the same gardner can also set his toaster oven, real oven, dishwasher, washer, dryer, and other appliances for a delayed or timed start also. Until I see the actual ordinance, it sounds like they are removing a feature to avoid company risk and liability in case the switch fails, not because of the stated reason. Heck, they have a dozen smokers on their own property plugged in all the time, has their building had a problem that was related to that accident scenario they are trying to sell us on? Can you tell I smell the odor of stinky fish in the air and it’s not coming from my RT700, but it is Bull! From my perspective, if/when this occurs, it should be a universal requirement on a go forward basis for everybody and applied for future designs because I subsidized the inclusion of this feature and I haven’t seen any mention of a refund under the UCC’s merchantability clause which should allow me to remedy the situation by retuning the RT700 as it is now considered defective from my perspective. A similar event is winding itself through the courts with Tesla disabling/hobbling features that were advertised and paid for on vehicles and I hope Tesla loses. I yield the podium to my fellow colleagues for their rebuttal.
Well Put!
First of all you cant fix stupid. The odds of your landscaper doing anything other than the minimal they are getting paid for would be like one in a million.
I am a disabled Veteran and I do appreciate the App in current state as it saves me from having to put on a prosthetic leg and hobble back down a few stairs. I didnt use the app for the first year. It just would not connect. Then finally I got it working. I wish I had it working sooner as it is simple and works well for the most part. It has saved me countless trips back and forth to check on things.
If you take away what I paid for then someone should reimburse me for that feature or at least a bag of pellets!. This sounds like some new rule from Washington State or California.

In re to the "what if's" of the world.

What if....after the app function is disabled..what if....it was your grandfather or Mother that fell down the stairs, cracked their coconuts and died going to the Grill to shut it off. Maybe people should not have their kids going fishing without a big fence around the water and a life guard stationed and no hook as OMG it might get hooked in their eye.
My God you can do a "what if" on about anything to fit someone's personal narrative. I get the basic idea of the hypothetical of the kids dying after a fire but if their are no statistics that it has harmed a few then it just doesn't hold water. I would bet their have been more child injuries on a soccer field than from a house fire that started outside.
Better ban all space heaters, put up padded walls everywhere. Ban all vehicles, most toys, all campgrounds. I dislike most hypotheticals as they are so one sided and fact less most of the time. Let the consumer choose and the market will decide.

What if…… A frog had wings? Wouldn’t bump his a$$ when it hoped but you can’t and won’t ever fix Stupid. I am still trying my best not to go off, so I will have another drink now. Forks and spoons are real killers I tell you. Ooops headed to the drink now. 😬

The bottom line is that feature is turned off. No matter how much customers are for/against/neutral on the topic, ranting about it here is not going to accomplish anything. If you want it changed back to what it was before, contact recteq directly. Especially if you are one of the accounts that only joined here to rant about this. You never joined earlier to contribute anything productive to this community, what makes you feel like we want to hear from you on this BS now?

This 👆 is what I have been trying to say, but wasn't nearly as eloquent as @Greg Jones was in his brief, to-the-point post. Thanks, Greg, for this post.

@Jim6820

It would be a huge void in the forum if you left.
Maybe our admin Mike could assist in some way ?

No intention of leaving; just expanding my horizons to get more of what I’m interested in and less of the noise I’m not interested in. No need for Mike to do anything.

As for “voids,” we’re all just a small piece in a large jigsaw puzzle. One missing piece doesn’t alter the picture much.
