I use this scraper, very effective. May be a little more expensive than a putty knife, but it does a great job and even has handy measurements on it.

I second the Memphis Dust mentioned above, no salt in the rub, just dry brine first with Mortons kosher salt for a few hours or overnight. Not too spicy. My family has been very happy with it. If you want a little more heat you can always add a little cayenne.
No foil here, just scrape it down every few cooks and good to go. Takes all of 30 seconds. It doesn't have to be perfect, its a grill and will get dirty again.
