Ok, I'm at about my wits end here. I'm trying to find a place to get a whole chub of bologna - preferably on a regular basis. The last time I found a decently priced 5lb chub of Bar-S bologna was at a random food lion over a year ago. Great price but they described it as an "in-and-out" item and had no idea when, or if, it would come back. I live in a relatively rural area. Despite calling every grocer in my area none of them have it. I'm in Maryland right now at the in-laws about 30 minutes from DC. You would think someone around here would have it but alas, I can't find it.

I have "settled" with buying a chub of bologna from the deli counter before but who wants to spend $5.99/lb on it? I certainly don't.

Any ideas?!

I get mine at US Foods Chef’s Store. Really good prices on meat there but still $4.09 per lb. Their Virginia locations are in Lynchburg and Roanoke. Probably won’t help you to just run over and pick one up but if you head down that way take a cooler with you.
I’ve also picked up some at the Walmart Deli but I don’t remember what I paid.

It's $4.75 at the depot so that's not a bad price.

Something like this, or bigger?

Thanks for the input folks. I was after the Bar-S bologna simply because of price. When I found it at Food Lion that one time it was $9 for the 5lb chub which was amazing though I recognize it certainly isn't the 'best' bologna available. I've often bought it over the counter at the deli, just hate the price is all.

MOSmoke - As for size I guess it really doesn't matter. I like to cut them into bite size pieces and make bologna burnt ends. I can do the same with spam but that certainly isn't any cheaper. Where did you find the ones in the picture?

I got these from a friend who works for a meat company. The story I got on these is that someone forgot to add 1 seasoning during production so they couldn’t send it out. So they made it available to employees to get rid of it. My intention is to use them for burnt ends as well.

As for where to find them, I wish I had an answer for you. He isn’t high enough up on the food chain to know where it was supposed to be shipped. It doesn’t sound like it’s something they make all that often.

I’ve been busy with projects around the house and the weather isn’t cooperating so I just moved these from the fridge to the freezer this morning. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve had time to fire up the Bull. My outdoor setup isn’t conducive to smoking in the snow, so alas, I’ll be waiting for at least a few more days.

Just about any deli counter that sells sliced bologna will sell a piece as big as you want. I have my deli slice it about 3/8 inch thick for killer smoked fried bologna sandwiches.
