I’m not a particular fan of vinegar-based BBQ sauce, but I do enjoy reverse-engineering recipes. Here are some thoughts on reverse-engineering a less-spicy version of the Recteq BBQ sauce found here:
https://www.recteq.com/products/mild-gourmet-bbq-sauce
Recteq lists the ingredients (but not quantities of each) on their website. These are the ingredients for the sauce I think you want to duplicate, but with less heat:
Vinegar, Water, Brown Sugar, Ketchup, Mustard, Onion Powder, Pepper, Salt, Garlic Powder and Cayenne Pepper. Eliminate the Cayenne pepper and you eliminate the heat your family doesn’t like.
Now, here’s a similar recipe with most of the same ingredients:
https://www.myforkinglife.com/vinegar-bbq-sauce-north-carolina-style/
Ingredients:
- 2 cups apple cider vinegar
- 1 ½ cup water
- ½ cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 Tablespoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Add
- 1/3 cup yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon onion powder,
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder

I’m guessing you’ll be pretty close to what you are looking for. Adjust quantities to taste, as needed. Good luck.
