Thermoworks goes Wireless

I’m optimistic about the FireBoard Pulse. They have confirmed it’s compatible with my LSG cabinet so I’ll be able to use the same FB app for smoker and wireless probes. It’s a small thing, but the color coding is a plus for bigger cooks.
Got one (stainless) on pre-order. The curious thing about the color coding is that the stainless probe is good to 662°F and the colors are good to 572°F. I already have a S1G so all I need for long range is the Pulse probe. Supposed to ship ‘late August’, so this coming week I presume.

It will be interesting to hear your thoughts about the FireBoard Pulse after you have a little time with it. The TW RFX is due to ship “in September” and I have two ordered. I guess that makes me “a thermometer junkie” too, @Greg Jones. ;)

I am currently using a pair of Meater 2+ probes and they seem to be working OK, but Bluetooth range with them is pretty limited. If I walk to the back of the house—about 40’ from the grill—they will drop out. I’m hoping the TW units will have better range. I don’t need anything that will work over huge distances (miles), just something to stay connected throughout our 1/2-acre property.

Just got an e-mail from ThermoWorks with a link to this video regarding the connectivity of their new RFX probes.

Pretty impressive; it works through a covered Dutch oven inside an oven.

You should research h the FireBoard S1G technology also. I’m waiting until both products ship, to make an opinion but the Pulse/S1G probe and the RFX probes sound like similar technology. I’ve been using the S1G antenna and Beacon receiver for some time now-works incredible. I’m NOT an early/beta tester of the Pulse probe, so I’ll have to wait for mine like everyone else.

Looks like the FireBoard S1G is using a 900 MHz radio frequency while the ThermoWorks RFX is using 433 MHz. Similar concept, indeed, though the lower 433 MHz frequency should have a better penetration through metal enclosures. Both should have better penetration capability than the Bluetooth 2.4 GHz signal.

Now, the problem I have with 433 MHz is that it is smack in the middle of the amateur radio 70 CM band and I worry a little about radio frequency interference between the probe and my radio gear. I am a ham radio operator. We’ll see.

I am definitely intrigued. Combustion Inc did not work out for me. Their customer service on accepting the return was excellent. These new products may be what i need. That dutch oven test was fun to watch.

My experience as well. Their product had some issues, but their customer service was stellar. I may even try them again some day if it appears that they’ve worked out the product issues since I like their predictive technology. And, as @Greg Jones noted, I am also a thermometer junkie. :ROFLMAO:

Not ashamed to say that I became very frustrated last spring trying to install a new version update for the thermometers. Patience won out after both were fully discharged and CI apparently made some tweaks. Both thermometers updated in early June and have been good to go since. Not throwing shade at anyone who posts their different experience, but CI seems to be a company that listens to customers and works to improve their product.

I'm glad that worked out for you. While I did not stay a current customer, I was treated very well and would absolutely consider giving them another shot some day. More competition in the marketplace is good for all of us.

I agree with both points. Posting different or opposing points of view is a healthy thing when done respectfully. I wish our current society would learn that lesson and take it to heart.

And, CI has—indeed—been both a stand-up company, and an innovative one. No question about that.

Contacted TW by chat yesterday and was told still another 4 weeks out before shipping. Looking forward to using it thanksgiving if possible. Anyone else have a preorder in?

Yes, I have a TW RFX pre-order in. Placed it the day they were announced. I have been encouraging them for the past couple of years to bring out a wireless probe. Don’t know if they actually heard me, but they are finally coming out with one.

Got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago saying the first shipment had been delayed until sometime in October. They also noted that they were improving the product on the fly, so the delay time was not being wasted.

I have long used TW products and know they won’t release one until they are confident in it. I appreciate that approach.

TW just emailed that shipping is starting. I'm sure interested to see what our early purchasers think over the next month.

OMG, another enabler 🤣🤣 I am not looking, telling you I am not. 😳

Yep; got a similar e-mail yesterday. Since I was a pretty early orderer, I’m hoping mine will be on the way soon. Looking forward to trying them out and comparing them to the Meater 2+ probes I have.

All good if you are an enabler. I'm optimistic this will be a good product I may want.

Good news! Just got an e-mail from TW saying my RFX wireless thermometer order (2 probes and a RFX GATEWAY™ receiver) has “shipped” from American Lake, Utah, and should be here in 3-5 days.

Looking forward to hearing some feedback! Seems like many folks are testing them, but no reports here for everyday users.

Congratulations! Been quite a wait. It’s always fun to get to know and use new tools. Hoping my order ships soon also.

Do you have a particular cook planned as a test for it?

I will probably do a couple of simple cooks first; likely pork tenderloins and a tri-tip or chuck roast. My plan is to use the new RFX probes alongside the Meater 2+ probes I have with my TW Signals as a comparison standard. Should be fun.
