I make a lot of jellies/jams hot sauces, etc. with stuff I grow in the garden. Last summer I had an abundance of blackberries and decided to try my hand at making some mead. I started with store bought honey, did a little research and just went for it, figuring that worst case scenario I’d have to pour it out if it was no good. My grandpa used to make wine, as well as several aunts and uncles so I guess it’s in my blood lol.

I took a bottle of my first batch along to deer camp last fall and ended up finding a source for locally produced honey. Since then I’ve made several more batches a gallon or two at a time, and continued to research and refine my technique as I hone my craft. I’ve gotten good feedback from the batches I’ve shared with friends and family, and I continue to learn with each batch I make. Patience is important as it’s not a hobby that gives any kind of instant gratification, but it’s pretty cool to pull a bottle out of the cellar and know that I made it.

Today I bottled a gallon of Vikings’ Blood (cherry) mead. I’m really happy with it already, and it should be amazing after it sits in the cellar for 6 months or so. I have a gallon of pineapple that I will bottle in another week or so, and I have really high hopes for it as well.

Anyway, I just thought I’d share one of my relatively new hobbies. Here are a few pics of stuff that I’ve bottled recently….

Cool ... Great job. Makes great gifts and wonderful food for friendly conversations.

Must be a great year for blackberries! I bought these at the local farmer’s market today and they are the best I’ve ever tasted, other than the ones we picked wild as kids (the kids and the berries were wild, in case anyone was wondering). I planted some myself this year for the first time ever-looking forward to my first harvest!
