Second shelf for the bull

Been building/fabricating a second shelf for my bull. Went as far as I could today. Yet another trip to the hardware store is in my future. It is coming along nicely though. Here’s a few pictures of the progress so far.

That looks great. You will soon have a RT700+ or 1250-, lol. I especially like to offset on the ends for air flow. Will the rear and front also have an air gap? I wonder if the probe end will throw off the temp sensor? Did you find this solution better than just using 2 small shelves or 1 large shelf? What are you typically cooking that will be on the top shelf? I considered a kit myself be realized I needed the height for pork butts, whole turkeys and chickens that are not spatchcocked. Keep us in the loop as this project matures. Looking forward to seeing future pics and getting your opinions.

Currently welding up the shelf. In the true midwestern way, all welding has been completed while wearing shorts and sandals.

Still looking good. I like the shorts and sandals comment. That’s the official “osha“ approved uniform for India. It‘s fun until you get sputtering, then not so fun. Did you have any problems mounting the brackets? It looks like you welded them in place. Did you prefer that to bolting them on?

This is only a first draft prototype but I think it’s ready for an epic bbq in a day or two. There were a lot of questions so far. I’ll be happy to answer them after I see how the first cook goes.

Do you like DIY projects like this? I think there is already a second shelf on the market. Chad Peterson I think is his name. Here is the link.

Hats off to you... I sure don't have this kind of skill or patience! Congrats on a job well done. Send us the pics of it seasoned and cooking!

Well, I’ve done chicken and burgers on the upper shelf. Works exactly as planned. As far as cost is concerned, I have about $11 bucks into this project so far. That is because I have a lot of material left over from other projects. It would have been a little pricey to buy all the metal and tools that relate. I do enjoy building things like this. The smoke stack breathes very easily and the temp probe is unaffected. So far so good but I’m a guy who likes to keep toying with things and I’m sure adjustments will be fabricated by winter.
