Has anyone tried the Royal Oak 100% charcoal pellets and if so, your opinion, thoughts ?

Yes, they work fine but are not worth the money nor the minimal extra amount of smoke flavor they "might" be adding over regular pellets. The masses here that want more smoke will cook at 180/200 and or add a smoke tube.

I switched to using these exclusively, both in the hopper and the Smoke tube in my 590/Stampede. They do produce a more "char" smoke flavor ( reminiscent of a charcoal ).
I have had 0 issues with them, and they produce better (slightly heavier) smoke flavor than any other pellets I have tried over the years. I wont use anything else. IT will cost you a few dollars more over other "pellets", but I felt the flavor it gave back was worth it. (Subjective).
They also do burn hotter, which translates into using less of them to maintain heat I have noticed. so the few dollars more I have had to order less to keep up with my cooking, I would call that a win.

That advice might go along with them also telling us to not use any gasket on the lid for a better seal, and to also start pellet ignition with the lid closed.
....and that we are too stupid and don't need the remote start option, and they will to save us. :ROFLMAO:😂

I use these on the direct side of my dual fire and they do provide a light Charcoal flavor when I do my high heat cooks. The other benefit is they don’t draw moisture so you can store them indefinitely in the hopper without worrying about diminishing performance. I wish they were cheaper and more readily available, but I like them for what I’m using them for. Best place I’ve found to buy them is Walmart. But they are at limited locations.

Exactly why I like to mix them in with my Kirkland pellets, I do believe the flavor is even better and the fire does IMHO burn perhaps a bit hotter.

They are available on Amazon, $35 for 30 lb bag, free shipping!

I got them on sale at tractor supply. I mix them with Kirkland pellets all the time. No issues in either of my recteq grills, 1250, 340.

I’m always trying to improve smoke profiles since moving to recteq from a Weber smoky mountain almost 3 years ago.

While my food turns out great, I do miss real charcoal. I’m thinking of moving to a charcoal gravity fed smoker next spring and keeping one recteq.

The bbq oddessy continues….

I just noticed this thread and for me it is helpful. I used to use these charcoal pellets when I wanted the heat with a minimal smoke flavor impact. I had some family that did not care for a heavy smoke flavor. Also when I was baking sourdough bread, I would switch to the charcoal pellets.
I haven't used these in a few years, but because I was reminded here, I will pick up a bag and try them out.

thanks to all.
