hey everyone. So wanted to make a separate post as I haven’t seen anyone saying this about the flagship 1100. I have a paint issue and have noticed it getting worse. I have only owned mine for 10 months and it’s kept under a roof and always covered . Very disappointed with this as I’ve had a Weber spirit for almost a decade and it doesn’t even have a chip. I reached out to support and they offered to send me touch up paint and said this is normal. I disagree .

The non stainless steel exterior components of Recteq grills are powder coated. I have noted slight rust in a few places on the shelf under my RT-700 but not the lid as you have experienced.

I think this is inevitable on any non stainless steel exposed to outside moisture/humidity, whether covered or not.
Even the mighty Yoder grills come with touch up paint included. I use a little steel wool and black Krylon spray paint on my under grill shelf/grate when rust/peeling powder coat occurs.

I have pretty much the same thing on my RT-700. But I think that’s part of the stainless steel barrel. I assumed it was smoke and grease coming from the top of the lid. My lid is not sealed.

So just be ok with paint peeling and melting away on a 1200 dollar smoker got it.

Nobody said to be OK with it, but you know what your options are. I disagree with RT saying that's "normal" in particular with only owning for 10 months, but it isn't the first time they have had "techs" say some interesting things or just blame the owner. Many of us put Lava-lock high temp gasket on our lids, these should come from the factory with it IMHO and helps with sealing and keeping that from happening to the edges. My buddy has an 1100 and uses it very frequently, keeps it outside uncovered at times as well "does have lid gasket"......not a spec of rust on it. Looks like you have scrubbed the top of smoker with something as well, that's stainless steel vs powder coated lid and perhaps you chipped/worn the edges of the lid?

Also looks like a pretty shoddy powder finish as well, doesn't look very thick or good hammered finish, you can also see the transition of the finish near the top being quite different, do you run pretty high heat frequently? I work in a metal fab shop, I am betting that lid wasn't properly cleaned/prepped before it was coated, and that will work it's way out of the finish in particular with heat applied and UV rays.

Plus, when I open the lid, regardless of the reason, that area showing stuff is exactly where “stuff” will drip onto.

Here’s a pic of my 4-years-old Bull with the same stuff.

I was looking at the lid edge not the SS barrel patina. Maybe I missed what to OP was speaking too?

Stupid me…I wasn’t looking at the lid itself…just the steel barrel above it. 🤪

Apologies if I confused the matter.
Ok, No worries at all from my standpoint, I thought I was having a moment 🤣🤣

Thanks for the reply. Yea so I have not scrubbed the area at all. I maybe have used a paper towel that is damp to just get some residue off but that’s it. I do cook at high temps sometimes when doing pizza and I think that is what it’s from as I also have paint melting at the bottom of the barrel where my stand is attached. What I guess bothers me is I’m told by support this is normal and that they will send me paint. Love my smoker and makes great food so that’s all that matters to me but it does start to become a bummer that it’s peeling within the first year. Planned to have this thing for a decade at least as I came from a pit barrel that not once peeled or rusted. As far as the rust that is forming under the peeled paint what would be the best way to handle this? Thanks in advance

To do it right, that lid needs to be sandblasted clean, then properly cleaned and re powder-coated or perhaps sprayed with high temp wood stove paint? I don't cook higher than 350 ever, this is my low and slow machine, but I know more than a few have had paint issues with running regular high temp cooking.

How much to fab a stainless replacement lid? Wondering if that’s even something to consider vs blasting and powder coating?

That would be pricey, you'd want a thicker gauge and high quality AMERICAN stainless steel aint gonna be cheap. Of course having someone sandblast and the powder coat won't be either, but a stainless lid from scratch would have to be designed/programmed and then sheared and finally formed in a pressbrake. But yeah.....it could be done.
