Grill(s) owned
  1. Deck Boss 590
I’ve got a new 590 that won’t heat up and it seems like the auger is over loading the fire box. I’ve talked to CS twice but didn’t get anyone who seemed to understand the problem or a solution. I’ve adjusted the delivery rate, manually lit the pellets and cleaned the fire box several times. Every time I start the fire the box (manually or auto) it eventually overloads and spills out pellets while only smoking. I don’t remember the brand but the pellets were a “premium, all natural” pellet from Lowe’s. Anyone had this issue, too? Any ideas other than changing out pellets?

ADJUST THE IGNITER.........they are coming too far recessed from production and need adjusted to where it just peeks past the guard. Also reset everything to default once the igniter is adjusted, then make adjustments from there if warranted.

Is the fan blowing and don’t “start” the pellets, get them glowing orange. Delivery rate only counts for super low temps.

I think @Motodad1776 and @SmokeOCD are hitting on something. If you light it manually does the fan run and the grill function? If neither works, you could have a controller issue or wiring issue. Check the wire harness.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is there a video or description for adjusting the igniter? I think the fan is running.

A quick search on YouTube for RecTec igniter adjustment provided hits for many of the RT products.

Should be "very obvious" if the fan is running. Take out the grill grates, remove the drip pan, remove the heat shield, turn on the grill and see if the igniter is glowing red and the fan is running. To adjust the igniter simply remove the 4 screws that mounts the firepot and very carefully lift out to access the back of where the rod goes in, take a 2.5mm allen wrench and loosen the set screws to push the rod a bit further out than flush. This vid below for you starts at about 30 seconds in, but will come in handy if your igniter rod is bad and needs replaced.......do not over torque the firepot screws, just snug them up.

Don’t assume you connected all the wires correctly when you put it together. Double check and make sure you have a current diagram for your grill.
(Not 100% sure but I think this is the right one.)

Use the grill’s test mode to test individual components. Recommend you remove grates, grease drip tray, and deflector shield so you can see what’s going on in the fire pot. You may need to empty the fire pot beforehand…be careful…could be hot.

Ok, went through the test mode and everything seemed ok until I got to the probes. The screen locked up and would not change or exit.

Are the nuts securing the probe sockets to the panel snug? This has been an issue for some folks in the past.

Hand tight, at least.

Un plugged the grill to reset and then powered up. Same thing - just smoke and temp never got over ambient. I know the pellets lit manually but I’m wondering if they are the problem even though I can manually light them.
. Ordered a new bag and will update.

for what it’s worth, I emailed Recteq on Sunday and I’ve yet to get a response.

E-mail is the LAST THING that works with RT customer service. It gets backed up and they only get to it when the phone calls drop off. Call them on the phone and ask to speak with a supervisor if you don’t get some prompt satisfaction.

I’ve already spoken with them twice and they were much less helpful than this forum. That’s why I’m here.

Well, I’m glad you feel you’ve gotten some help from folks here. That said, it sounds to me like you have a bad control board and need a replacement. Unfortunately, I don’t think any of us here can provide that.

I suggest you call RT again and insist on speaking with a supervisor, manager or “Ray” who is one of the owners. You need to get someone’s attention at RT with the power to make things right. I believe Ray’s e-mail address is [email protected] and I think his phone number is (706) 294-1729. Give those two avenues a try and see what you can shake loose.

You know who to call:
