Bull Most preferred flavor of pellet for pulled pork??

So my Rec Tec Bull is scheduled for delivery tomorrow!! So naturally I’ll have to smoke something on it tomorrow I’m wanting to do a Boston butt or shoulder for some pulled pork this weekend. I’m new to smoking and this will be my first smoke. I’ve got a rural king within 5 minutes of my house and they’ve got a lot of pellet choices. Any thoughts or opinions from anyone who’s done pulled pork on their Rec Tec??

With pork, I have always liked a combination of fruit tree pellets....apple, cherry etc and hard woods. The best is to find a blend including apple, cherry and then harder wood hickory, maple etc. Many producers have a "competition" blend combining both fruit and hard woods. I say, get your pit, whatever you have for fuel, use it, find what you like, then experiment.

I picked up a bag of Lumberjack Competition Blend pellets. It's a mix of Maple, Hickory, and Cherry. I'll try this for the first smoke of a shoulder tomorrow. Thanks!

I have two bags of the Lumberjack comp blend in my garage waiting for me to to try them. Just need to burn what's in my hopper first.

Let me know what you think of the Lumberjack blend.

Finished my very first smoke ever, ever. Let alone on this particular grill. I cooked up a pretty large sirloin using only olive oil and Ben's Heffer Dust. I reverse seared it and man oh man! The taste and the smell were incredible! Every bit was flavor packed. It was so juicy and delicious. The smoke flavor was perfect! I very much enjoyed the meal. Thumbs up from me on the Lumberjack Comp Blend.

I like the Lumberjack comp blend for lots of stuff - probably best on pork. The 'ultimate' I *think* is basically the same but apple instead of cherry.
I really like pecan for pork. But pecan is my go-to for a lot of things.

I did the comp blend on a shoulder yesterday. It turned out delicious! I'll try some pecan on some stuff after I burn through this comp blend.

I used Lumberjack 100% Cherry on this pulled pork, friends and family loved it !
Wife said it was the best I have ever cooked !

In the past I have used 50% oak, and 50% Apple, always came out good however not as good as 100% Cherry IMO.

Personally, if I could have exactly what I wanted, I would use a 50/50 mix of cherry and pecan. Pecan tastes a lot like hickory, but far more mild. And cherry + pork are meant for each other.

I'm looking into getting some of those claws too. I saw them at my local Rural King when I was buying the pellets.

As for pellets, I gave up trying to tell the difference between different pellet types years ago, I just can't tell the difference. I use Cookin' Pellets perfect mix for everything.

For me, it depends. Oak is king for beef in my book. Pork, I like Pecan, Hickory, cherry. Poultry, I really like Pecan, but sometimes use Apple or Cherry. Sometimes I roll the dice and mix a bunch of stuff.

If I was limited to one type of wood.....Pecan would be my overall go to.

Personally I go with pecan and mesquite. If I have time, I do it on my smoker with mesquite/pecan for 5 or 6 hours and then move it to the recteq to finish it off for another 4 to 6 hours. I prefer a much heavier smoke flavor you just can't get from pellets grills.

While I like to think I have a refined palate - I could tell you the variety of hops in whatever beer I'm drinking - Other that the over the top flavors like hickory or oak, I don't tell a lot of difference. Maybe that's for the best.
