Looks for a way to to get searing heat to some cast iron for smash burgers, steaks, etc. I am new to this grill and wondering if any has tried removing the pan and firebox cover, then cooked on a cast iron laid across the lower grill grades? Other suggestions? I want to be able to get a seared crust.

That’s essentially what a Bullseye is. The bullseye has a deflector plate so not exactly the same but you could certainly give it a try. Seems like it would be a hassle to pull the grates and drip tray then replace the grates.

I leave the deflector in, but take out everything else when using my griddle. It's a perfect fit going across, I have the larger one from recteq for my 1070.
For steaks I use grill grates and leave everything in the grill and they still work well for providing a sear, I usually give the steaks some smoke for 30-40 minutes on Lo then take off the steaks and crank it to 400 with the grates in to get that final sear.
