That’s a pretty big cutting board and quality wood boards that size will set you back a pretty penny. There are some bamboo boards that size out there, but bamboo is very hard on knives; it has a high silica content.

If I was looking for a board that size, I think I would be searching for a poly plastic one. They will be less expensive, are fairly easy to clean and are not hard on knives.

Now, if money is no object, you could look for a nice, end-grain acacia, teak, maple or walnut board, but expect to pay a couple hundred bucks for a decent one.

Whats a good size to get?

For large boards, 24x18 or 23x17 are common sizes. Here’s a link to a quality wood cutting board seller that will give you an idea of sizes and types commonly available. https://www.amazon.com/stores/JohnBoos/page/E0BDBBA3-9395-4D45-8BB6-867CF5CDF517?ref_=ast_bln. And, these boards are made in the USA if that’s important to you; it is to me.

Those are just examples; I don’t have that particular board, but it gives you a good idea of what large, quality boards look like and how they are priced. I have an 18x24 end-grain maple board that I’ve had for years and don’t even remember where it came from. Large boards are nice, but they do occupy a lot of counter space.

Looking for a good 24x24
Can anyone me some suggestions?
If you want a square board, you will want to search for butcher block boards. I’ve made my own boards for years, edge grain, 16”x24”x1.5”. I’ve always wanted to make an end grain board, but the amount of work needed changed my mind about making my own. I was all set to make a new edge grain board out of maple for my new kitchen, had even rough sawn the boards to size.

Before I went any further, I saw a mosaic edge grain maple board from Boardsmith.com and it was stunning. It matched my kitchen perfectly. I decided to buy it, cried a little over the price, but it is the last big cutting board I will ever need. It’s 18”x24”x2” and once it arrived (8 week wait for a mosaic board) I had no buyer’s remorse. Anyway, more than you asked for but I like a large board for primary use and something in the sizes I’ve listed above hits a sweet spot for me.

Take a look at the offerings by SonderLA. Excellent quality but a bit pricey. I would recommend walnut. The Alfred has worked well for me.

Those are some nice boards at https://theboardsmith.com/collections/shop-all. I think I saw the one you bought @Greg Jones and it is a beauty. Now, you have me wondering…no, no, no, I’m not going there! 🤣

I showed my Executive Director of Domestic Affairs the walnut end-grain “Big Block” board on the Boardsmith website and she commented that she preferred “the lighter Maple one like @Greg Jones just bought.” Then, without missing a beat, she added “…And we don’t need another cutting board.” Darn!

My Commander of the War Department says she doesn't want another cutting board too.

While we need a new one, I, am not even going to attempt it with she who is in charge of it all! Well that she knows about anyway.🤔

I have this one, it stays on the counter top and my 2 ladies and I use it all the time.
From what I've researched it is a common size.
I rotate it and flip it and oil and condition it regularly.
I often place a towel and plastic cutting board on top if I'm cutting a bunch of chicken.
We also make a bunch of bread, and rolls, english muffins, and pizza dough and all roll out well on it.
Amazon warehouse often has them at a good discount if you don't mind dings.

Sundays homemade pizza dough and sauce were kneaded and rolled out on it and baked at 500 on our 1070 on a baking steel

I have two 12 x 18 x 2 maples that are square cut and when needed I use a cam buckle strap to make one big board. Tape a disposable 24x18 over top and it works great

We have a bunch of mid size boards and a few larger ones. We had a generic large wood board that has a groove in it which I find myself grabbing for cutting up the holiday meats, due to the groove catching the juices. Our large UHMW poly board has a bit of a warp or cupping shape going and is a pain because of that.

I'm thinking of getting a board that fits into that big 26x18 cookie sheet I used for the spatched 20lb turkey. That would make juicy briskets, turkeys, etc. a cleaner and more practical exercise and catch all the juices. As a bonus, I could use that setup outdoors on a portable table or at a kitchen table when my wife is hogging the counter.

I was poking around on amazon and saw some stainless steel sheetmetal "cutting boards". 👎 Who are these people that make this stuff? I wouldn't use a butter knife on a stainless steel "cutting board".
