Anyone else notice that Costco ribs have a funky smell to them when you open the packaging? I normally buy from WF, but needed ribs in a hurry, so ran out to Costco and was reminded of that funky smell as soon as I opened them up. Anyone else? I don't notice that with WF.

I recently had a similar experience with ribs from BJ's...strong, pungent smell...I chucked them and went to Giant to get Smithfield brand...those smelled fine.

Yep, I don't purchase pork from Costco. WF all the way 😁

I personally trust Costco meats over any other store. They amount they go through helps keep product fresh. At my local Costco it’s Swift meats for pork, and as the article mentioned, most meats will have a scent once removed.

I do know it’s not a good idea to rinse them off or dump the bag juices down the drain, can cause some funky bacteria in the drain . Lay them out, pat dry with paper towels, season and smoke.

I personally would return them. One time I got really bad smelling chicken from costco and returned/exchanged it. Costco is great about pretty much taking anything back lol

Out of the package and onto the fire? I've read that, I even think it's on the fda website as best practice to avoid cross contamination. But I can't do it. I like to get the old juices and old odors washed off, and often there is ground bone from the saw. Drains are fine btw, almost 20 years in this house, no funk.

Don’t rinse your meat. It just increases the risk of spreading funk around in your kitchen. I’ve seen several videos on the topic, but this one just popped up this week.

There are several of us here that noted the issue with Costco pork. I quit buying Costco pork because not only the smell, but also they have actually been way past spoiled on occasion. That smell is the smell of bacteria growing.

I believe the Swift cryovac pack meats are from frozen shipments.

We have a Sams Club right next to our Costco. Their pork never has that funky spoiled smell.

P.S., the Costco ribs are also slick/sticky and the membrane is tough to remove. These things, along with the funky smell, indicate to me that they're old. Costco wasn't/isn't always that way.

This would be an interesting poll question. How many do vs how many don't.

It's not even about science; habit, superstition, tradition - whatever the reason is, it would be interesting to know the numbers.

Are you trying to expose those of us with dirty meat?

I like to listen to the experts on food safety, not what my grandma used to do. Adapt and learn...
