Has anyone tried these made from pecan shells (not wood)?
https://smokinpecan.com/products/pecan-shell-pellets?variant=42569989554354

They were mentioned in this video for smoked turkey breast which I would like to try one day.

I used to have a Masterbuilt cabinet electric smoker which used wood chips on top of the heating element. Wife liked the taste imparted by pecan wood chips. She and daughters seem to have developed a dislike of the smoke flavor of my RT1250 and I have been using Cookin' Pellets Perfect Mix which is a blend of Hickory, Cherry, Hard Maple & Apple.

So was wondering if these pecan shell pellets were worth trying. They are $32.95/20 pounds ($1.64/lb) while the Perfect Mix is $37.99/40 lbs ($0.95/lb). Thus 73% more expensive.

When I first got the RT1250 I used Bear Mountain exclusively as its easily sourced locally. After experiencing burn back into the hopper and a "puff lid pop" (aka explosion that destroyed the cold smoke box door hinge), I have been using the Perfect Mix exclusively.

@larry4406 I have not used 100% pecan pellets. I am a user of Cookin’ Pellets. I just opened and used a bag of their “Longhorn” blend (has some mesquite in it) on a brisket flat cook this past Wednesday. I found the smoke profile a bit strong. So now I know that mesquite may not be for me.

I’ve been using that “Perfect Mix” and have enjoyed it. I’ve recently finished a bag of their 100% hickory. That was good too. But I’m coming to the realization that I do prefer a lighter smoke. As I finish using the 3 bags of Cookin’ Pellets I have left, including “Apple Mash”, I’ll revert back to the RecTeq “Ultimate Blend” (oak & hickory). That’s more in my sweet spot of smoke flavor on my proteins.

Hopefully, someone can speak to the pecan pellets for you.

I’ve never cooked with pecan hulls, but I heard someone say this year that they are wonderful. I have 3-4 pecan trees at my new place, and next year I plan on harvesting the nuts and saving the hulls to use as-is in the charcoal grill and also seeing if they will work in a smoke tube. I’d be interested in your ]experience if you try the pellets.

I just ordered a 20lb box to try. I’m looking forward to it.

Smokin Pecan Pellets is all I use now. I tried them and got a great deal more smoke and used less pellets so it was a no brainer.

I’m not usually concerned about pellet price, but $33 for 20 lbs ($1.65/lb) is a bit over the top even for me. And, the only way I can get them is via mail order as the nearest retail outlet carrying them is 2,000 miles away.

My preferred LumberJack pellets are available locally for $10.99/20 lb ($.55/lb).

I picked up a box of the pecan shell pellets and have used them for two cooks, the first one was beef Dino ribs, the second a turkey breast. They do produce move smoke than the Lumber Jack that I normally use and we did like the smoke flavor. In the past I had tried the Lumber Jack pecan that I believe is mixed with oak. I think in the future I am going to mix some 100% oak pellets with the Smokin Pecan to make them a little more cost affective, maybe 20 or 30 percent oak.

Okay, I am the guppy that has been hooked. I just ordered 2 boxes to try out. I typically use Traeger Pecan with my RECTEQ BFG to do 150 lb+ Brisket cooks so the "pecan" word got me.

The ONLY thing I have ever missed from the "old days" burning sticks is a depth of flavor that I have never really matched by any other means. That said, I will NEVER (Okay, probably never) go back to burning sticks. Computerized PID controlled temperatures, even convection across the smoking chambers aided by computerized fan controllers and fans, automatic pellet feeders, and wifi connected monitoring devices have corrupted me.

I keep falling for this "next new thing" in an attempt to close the smoke intensity gap. Not More Smoke, but natural thin blue smoke flavor. It is the art and sole of stick burning and takes skill and patience.

I will give these a try both as the only pellet in the hopper and as an additive mixed with my Traeger pecan pellets.

As a side "plug", I have to say that the latest program updates to my BFG controllers from RECTEQ have provided my BFG with Plenty of smoke across a much broader range of temperatures, not just at the "low" settings.

I am not looking for more volume but rather hoping for more "depth". All this said, the Traeger "flavored oil" based Pecan Pellets have been pretty good and very consistent. I have used them with my BFG to put out more than 3500 lbs of briskets this year.

Update…I’m still waiting on the product to arrive. The company shipped via USPS. This morning’s USPS status shows that it arrived in Charleston this morning. So maybe I’ll get it tomorrow or Tuesday. Monday is a federal holiday.

With that in mind, I’ll take a moment to say “Thank You” to all the veterans and retirees AND their families out there. Thank you for your service to our country. God Bless America!!! 🙏🏼🇺🇸

And, thank you for your service as well, @TheRicker. May God bless all who have served.

I have not used them either but just got my first box in the mail. I did open the box to sift them and put them in an air tight 5 gallon bucket and to my pleasant surprise there was hardly any pellet dust in the bottom of the box (even after the US Post Office got their hands on it)…. I mean maybe 1/2 tablespoon or so. Now for those who find the price shockingly high (and I agree but Im a sucker for anything new smoke related) just know that you actually get 19 lbs and not 20. The box weighs 1 pound (so your price per pound just went up :) I put my pecan pellets in gallon size ziplock storage bags as the box wont fit in a 5 gallon bucket and weighed each bag to make sure they were evenly filled….19 lbs.

My dad is retired and runs a pecan cracking business. He ends up with trash cans full of pecan hulls/shells. I keep a bucket in my garage. I just take a handful and put in foil, poke some holes in it, and just place on deflector plate (380 bullseye). I can’t really tell if it makes a difference but it does produce a little smoke. Works better in gas grill b/c the temps are usually higher.

This ties in well with another thread where mixing in wood chips works for added smoke. If you crushed them down and maybe screened them so only smaller pieces are used, maybe you can mix them directly with the pellets.

My apologies for my delayed response.

I did receive my pecan pellets. Shipment timing was fine. Box not damaged…even though it was delivered by the USPS.

I have not opened it yet. I’m going to use them to smoke the Thanksgiving turkey though.
