I use PBW (powdered brewery wash). It's a powder mixed with water. The pan allows the grates to lay flat so I don't have to mix too much. Soaked the grates for a few hours and then just rinse and wipe dry. They look like new.

I've had good results with Greased Lighting (let it soak). For the grates I soak them in PBW (powdered brewery wash) disolved in water then hose them off.

I have found PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) does an excellent job on the grills. I mix it with hot water and let the grills soak for a couple of hours, wipe them down and they come out sparkling clean. Links for the PBW and the tub I use (an almost perfect size) follow...
