Stampede Wood chunks sitting directly on cast deflector?

Thinking about sitting these apple chunks directly on the cast iron heat deflector of my newish 590. I have only found one thread about this and people start suggesting smoke tubes or they did it with the older style deflectors. Just wondering if anyone has tried or had success or failures...

    New to Recteq

Have lurked here a while, just pulled the trigger and ordered the RT 590 bundle on the Labor Day sale. After having been burned by a cheap pellet grill that I returned after a few weeks, I decided to bite the bullet and go RecTeq. Hope to learn some great insight here.
