Storing pellets

Wanted to get thoughts on this. I bought a pretty big cooler that can hold up to 80 pounds of pellets. I keep the cooler in my outside shed. Should this be ok to keep them for a good while. How long do pellets stay good? Thanks

Just curious.. are you keeping the pellets in bags still or just pouring them in a cooler? Either way you should be ok just watch some plastics that are not food grade if not bagged although I doubt it would ever be enough to cause any issues. I store mine in the bags they come in in my basement (above ground) or once I open them in food grade 5 gal buckets with twist sealing lids. A bit overkill.

i keep mine in piles in my hunting gear room. it does have central air and i have never had any issues even with the bags from the bottoms. i would bet that you will be fine aslong as they stay dry. i have seen pallets at lowes stored outside garden under the roof but outdoors

I got two bags from Rec Tec when I got my grill and because of space I just got a pull style cooler ( just taller than long) and pored them in there. I bought me two 5 gallon bucket’s to get some Lumberjack Competition Blend tomorrow.

That’s a nice stack of pellets

I'm using these after opening a bag if not using the entire thing during a cook:

They have a O-ring which helps create a great seal.
I have been keeping my pellets in the orange Home Depot 5 gal buckets with these tops for years. I read a couple of posts here to keep them in food grade buckets which the orange buckets are not. Not sure why you would need to use a food grade bucket to store pellets. Nothing comes off of the bucket onto the pellets so how could it affect the safety of cooking food?

There are some articles on the internet about using food grade containers but I'm not to sure how far to take it with pellets. I got them food grade ones just for my own peace of mind. I'm the type that would think that if someone ate my cooks and didn't feel right maybe it's my buckets LOL. I just eliminate my own concerns and go that route.

I have had a RT for almost 2 years, I kept my first pellets in my barn, which is in Georgia, unconditioned. No problems. We moved and I keep them in the garage, I do put them in a Home Depot bucket as well and keep near the grills.
So far no issues, I think the main thing is keep them dry.

I did the same thing. The food grade buckets are not that much higher than the orange or blue buckets. Plus the fact that I don’t have to look at the advertising on an orange or blue bucket is worth something!

I buy RecTeq pellets from Amazon four bags at a time - 160 pounds. I have a Rubbermaid container that can hold all of them that stays outside under a porch that is out of the weather. I pour them out of the bags into my container and haven't had any problems with my pellets in over a year of doing it this way. They stay dry and when I get to the bottom of the container the pellets are fine.

I'm guessing for all the pellet dust?

I put mine in a 5 gal bucket from Ace Hardware or just leave them in their bag but off the floor. Works for me.
