New to Rectec; I got a used 680 for Christmas; just fired it up with a pork butt in it. Temp is steady at 225; but not a lot of smoke...any suggestions? I tried the 'extreme smoke' setting, not seeing much difference. I'm using a brand new bag of pellets from pit boss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Use Lumberjack 100% Hickory pellets and the extreme smoke setting. How long to use the setting depends on what you are cooking but eventually you’ll want to bump it up when you feel you’ve gotten enough smoke in your meat.

I’ve also read that Bear Mountain pellets are good but I’ve only got experience with Lumberjack.

Also, I’m not sure what you’re use to cooking on but you’re not gonna get the same level of “smoke” flavor if your use to something that uses charcoal and wood. It’s definitely there though and I’d describe it as a cleaner smoke. Less creosote maybe??

Good luck!

Assume you've cleaned everything including the fire pot. You can always use a smoke tube if you need additional smoke.

I have the Bull and do feel that unless you start low (which can greatly increase the cook time) I don't get enough smoke. When doing a Butt or Brisket which already takes a lot of hours, that's just not cool to me so I got a $10 smoke tube and fill it up with pellets and let set the temp to the proper temp for the meat I'm smoking and let the smoke tube do it's thing for a least the first hour. The increase in smoke is very much to my liking and sometimes, a bit too much.
Now some would say this is not the way it should be but I don't want a wood smoker, I want the convenience of a pellet smoker and to me, this is simply one of the things that you have to accept with these pellet smokers.
Even without the extra smoke love of a smoke tube, I am totally pleased with the flavor of the food so far. I don't use the tube all that often and for simpler cooks, I just set the temp to low and let it smoke for 30 minutes then kick it up and let it cook.

Your best smoke is thin blue smoke that may be hard to see. So if you got that, your good. I sometimes have to sneak up on my 590 thinking it ain't smoking. Then I see the thin blue and know all is well.
