I think 17SS nailed it...make sure the vents are clean. Smoke coming from the hopper was the last thing I noticed before I had a hopper fire. The grill was "clean looking" but I wasn't keeping the vents clean. When they get clogged it pulls air from the hopper instead.

The hinge on my grill just broke yesterday in the middle of a cook. It's really hard to cook holding the lid in one hand. I thought the screws had stripped or backed out but after looking at it the screws are still in but the hinge is still screwed to the lid but the hinge broke clean at the seam.
