I’m seriously considering ordering a 380X (Bullseye-Plus?) but would like to have some feedback from folks who have received or, at least, used one. Is it really a big upgrade over the standard 380? With the price doubling on the X model, I’m wondering if the durability and usability has at least doubled as well.

We have purchased a new home that does not have natural gas service, so I can’t take my beloved Napoleon 450RB with us. I’ve looked at converting it to propane, but that seems to be a pretty iffy project. At this point, I’ve pretty well decided to find it a new home and move on.

This is probably heresy on this forum, but are there any other viable pellet-fueled alternatives to the 380/380X? My research hasn’t found much in that area.

Any and all feedback will be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

I have not seen or used one, but I’ve owned two of of the RT-380b grills. The X model has a lot of nice improvements, but IMO the 1k temp potential is not one of them. The additional height, shelf, WiFi controller, larger hopper, and ash dump are the things that would interest me the most. Especially the additional height, as the 380b is a back-breaker to grill on. Nice improvements, but worth 2x the price?

Thanks, @Greg Jones; that’s interesting information. As you said, I’m not sure the 1K temperature potential floats my boat either. I can sear a steak nicely at 550-600F. I suppose folks who make lots of pizzas might like it, however.

I do like the additional use of stainless steel, larger hopper, additional height (although, I’m only 5’9”) and better wheels. With my past experience with RT wifi capability (especially on weekends), that capability doesn’t do much for me.

The big question I’m pondering is do the “improvements” that would be useful to me add up to $400 extra over the standard 380? Still pondering.

Patiently...well sort of....watching as well. On the fence for a PK or one of these doo-dads. Live direct fire has it's advantages. Convenience of another predictable pellet "utility" also has it's merits.

1K degrees is not a selling point although seeing this contraption last summer in action with some cowboy steaks started on a RecTeq for a smoke kiss was a very special thing. But I digress from the topic at hand.

Folks, you have lost sight of the selling point. It's not the 1K degrees, it's the:

I don't know. I reviewed the original "release" video again. Except for the height advancement and wi-fi, pretty much all of the others items were "we had to make this change". Undercarriage beef-up, because of the height, and wheel upgrade. The ash dump is because of the deeper firepot. Bigger hopper is because the 1000 degree beast is going to INHALE pellets - do dig the "afterburner" name -- it will. With my current 380 able to do 749 degrees, will I really USE the 1K. I've got Grill-Grates. As others have brought up, it would be more attractive with a little bit longer warranty. They were all over the place at RecTeqFest, and were cooking away. I can't see replacing my 380 with a 380X, but if I didn't already have a 380, I might be inclined. As is the case with the 380, they push it as your "Daily Grill", and I can see it. Just remember one thing, and that is that it does not have a drip pan or drip can. Either use a pan under the grate, or let the grease hit the ash base in the bottom. I do really like my 380. I think you would be happy with it. They were doing all of the hams for today's "Funday Friday" on the 380Xs.

When the 380X was first announced, it really got my juices flowing, but after some consideration, I'm not sure. I would never use the 1000 degrees. Oh' maybe a couple of times just to see it work, but not frequently, much like me not using RIOT mode all the time. I don't think this grill is sturdy enough to take it all the time. The new PID seems to be a real improvement, but for what I use my 380 for, I can get to 225 before I can drink a beer, so Wi-Fi is great but not a deal maker, and I have WI-FI thermometers if I really need them. The things I really like is the fold out shelf and the bigger hopper, because there is absolutely no workspace on the 380. But I just bought a small SS rolling cart, that gives me plenty of workspace for about $50. And finally, there is still only a 2-year warranty, which is Recteq telling us that they question the longevity of this unit compared to their larger models. Bottom-line, I would buy the original 380 at $399 all day long. I love this thing! But I'm not seeing a $400 difference. If the 380X was $500, I would probably own it.

They did address many of the short coming of the 380.

Shelf
Much better cart
Wi-Fi .

How was the LTL freight delivery experience? I’ve been talking directly with Recteq and they tell me the 380X won’t ship via FedEx but will come via a LTL freight carrier. My previous experience with two deliveries is that the LTL freight deliveries are neither timely nor predictable. I need to know what day the delivery will be made so I can have someone there to accept it as I likely won’t be there.

Was delivered by FEDEX , 2 boxes , grates and top 1 box all other hardware and bottom half was in larger 2nd box. box was in really good shape no dings or holes. Cant say that when the 590 was delivered 2 years ago via freight truck

Was this a 380 or the new 380X? Just this afternoon, I was told by RT that the 380X would not ship via FedEd and had to go out LTL freight. Please let me know.

Well, on Monday I’m going to call again. I won’t betray any confidences, but I will suggest that I know of someone who had a 380X delivered by FedEx and would like to know why I can’t have one shipped the same way.

Thanks for the info, @traxxs.

I see they also replaced the porcelain coated grill grate.

Wow! Good looking Tomahawk, but those scratches on a brand new grill wouldn’t sit well with me. Sure hope RT steps up for you.

Grilla has a smoker built on the order of the 380, its called an Alpha. Highly rated and you can find reviews of the Alpha vs the 380 which might help you decide.

Well, I did contact Recteq yesterday (via e-mail as I was briefly out of town on some personal business). It seems that RT has recently changed to shipping the RT-380X in TWO boxes, so it actually CAN be shipped via FedEx or UPS. Apparently, Recteq is not that good at getting all of its customer service folks on the same page. Seems like the person I talked to previously was not aware of the change.

I am now assured that the RT-380X does NOT have to be shipped via LTL freight any longer. That may just open the door to me ordering one. I still need to do a bit more research on other options before hitting the “Buy” button.
