Wi fi thermometers

Fireboard2 is pretty amazing, really great app and with the addition of the spark it's extremely handy to remotely monitor cooks.
What exactly does the Spark do that the normal Fireboard doesn't? I'm just curious because when I originally looked at that I didn't think it would really add anything over my Fireboard and Thermapen One combo I currently have.

Thermapen one and Mk4 are better instant reads but honestly the spark is barely slower than the mk4.

The spark does have a nicer screen and the capability of having a port for leave in probe to plug into as well as connecting to Bluetooth or WiFi for being able to get alerts on that leave in probe or view graphing for the leave in through the app or website. These features are cool but I'd still probably prefer my thermapen one or mk4 and when I'm doing competitions the thermapen is what I have in my shirt pocket.

The main reason I bought the spark is that it's screen can be a remote screen for the fireboard2, so I can sit it on the table while I'm having beers and see it displaying the temps of my fireboard2 probes. I can also use it as a backup instant read or a backup leave in probe if my others fail.

Feel free to ask any questions. It's an expensive combo but it works for me and I'd rather have the display and the backup then save the money.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I guess I always just use my phone connected to the Fireboard through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi so I've never really thought about that. It would be kind of nice to have a screen that's always on the counter.

The one from Combustion looks pretty nice. I don't know that I need it, but I just had to join their wait list. Something tells me "want" will force me to buy it.
They had an early order period, delivery scheduled for late June, and full refund at any time if desired. The developer also created the Joule sous vide circulator, so it should be a legit deal and a legit product. I ordered the two probe/1 timer option, so we already know I don’t need it!

I have and use the MeatStick truly wireless and if you get the Wifi (Ultimate Range) version like me its a god send. Oh, and it doesnt have the problems notifying you of your set alarms for notifications like the RecTeq App does.

I just found another benefit out the other day. Instead of grabbing my thermapen I grabbed the spark and used it for temp on my cook, it added the probe temps on the chart and at the times I probed it. Graphed out and had the data of the spark probe for historical reference. I haven't gotten data on the NFC yet but I'm assuming that will show and correlate with a specific channel on the graph.

Hey Greg, I eyed that combustion for awhile and finally signed up for their newsletter to buy it.

I emailed them the other day but haven't heard back. Do you think they will have anymore available for June or will I have to wait till after June to order? You may or may not know but I won't say I'm 100% sold on it but it looks pretty darn sweet. It is just bluetooth instead of wi-fi but I really don't think the wi fi is needed. I do have the wi fi with my RecTeq Bull and yeah, it is very nice to be able to monitor anywhere but if the combustion until can somewhat tell when something will be done, then you can just plan running to the store based off that.

Anyways, any insight is appreciated and thanks for posting about this unit. I've done some research on the web and haven't been able to find too much. Is the June units the first batch of them or second batch of them? Seems like first batch b/c I don't see anything on YouTube except from Chris Young himself who invented it.

Thanks for your help!

I really don’t have any additional info on what is going on with production. If Combustion started an email group to keep the early buyers in the loop, I haven’t seen it. As far as I know, the early June batch is the first and they were all pre-paid, so I wouldn’t expect any extra from that batch. As to the technology in the Combustion, I’m OK with BT only for the thermometer. I’ve had a couple of Mavericks, a couple of ThermoWorks that were BT only, and the range was fine.

I should also mention the wireless elephant in the room, and that is the MEATER+. I have one that my wife gave me as a present, and it’s a solid unit. It’s BT as well, but if you have a spare device that you can leave in BT range, it all connects via WiFi and you can get notifications when not in BT range. The MEATER is also nice in that you can setup unlimited notifications, so as an example I gave recently I set up notifications for when to wrap, when to start probing for doneness, and a notification if the ambient temp of the pit dropped to an unacceptable level-all from the one probe. I don’t know if the Combustion will do this or not.

The downsides to the MEATER is that the probe leaves a pencil-sized hole in the meat, which doesn’t look great on the plate, and the predictive when done feature is worthless on low and slow cooks. I expect the Combustion to be much better in this respect because it has more sensors. Chris Young has said that the Combustion should excel in this area. The MEATER+ is also less money, and has been on sale recently for 20% off. Link Hope this helps.

Looks like from their website the June release has been pushed back to August.

Doesn’t surprise me at all-most of these first run products are dragged out by months (years). I will say I’m disappointed that I didn’t get an email on the delay. Seems like those who bought in early should hear about the delay first from the source.

I would agree with you Greg - I would be upset also. I've just had their website up on a tab when I'm on my work computer.

But I'm not sure....maybe August will be the next batch? That is kind of my hope. I just got this email from Chris Young himself on May 3rd. So if it was pushed back....something happened in the last 3 weeks.

Hello Kenneth:

We're currently waiting on confirmation of when we will receive our next allocation of critical components, once we have that information we'll re-open orders since we'll know when we can deliver them. Our hope is to do that in the next few weeks.

Best regards,
Chris Young

Interesting, mind sharing when you order yours? I ordered mine 4 months ago-never got that email myself. Perhaps my order is still on track to ship in early June.

I just received a text from them. They are now accepting new orders and mention an August shipping time. I'm tempted.

Glad I ordered when I did. I bought the double barrel bundle and the price today is $105 more, plus I got a $10 discount for a referral.
I just ordered that one yesterday. They gave me a $40 credit for being on their customer list, but I'm sure the price has gone up. I was too late to join the initial orders a few months ago.

Glad you are in. I hope we will both be pleased with out investment.
Agreed, fingers crossed. My wife was more supportive when she learned it could be used in more than just the smoker. She will want it for the oven and crockpots. Plus she can call it my birthday gift and check that off her list.

Now, that’s what I call a “win-win situation!” ;)
