Alright so I have a 700 and a bullseye. So not totally ignorant on maintenance. Here's what I've done:
Vacuumed everything out
Started rec but it wasn't heating up correctly
I did it all over again with another cleaning

Smoke continues to come out the hopper and not the bullseye. Does anyone have any recommendations on cleaning the area between the hopper and the grill? I tried to vacuum from both sides but this did not fix the problem.

I trust you installed the lid spacer?

One thing I do when starting my grill is I have the lid wide open until the fire starts. I have had smoke come out of the hopper but it stops eventually as the grill gets going.

Clean/scrape the vents out on the bullseye lid and the surfaces between the lid and grill. I just went through this a couple of months ago.

I had the same thing happen on my 590. It turned out to be bad pellets creating a ton of sot. I cleaned and replaced pellets and wa-la it was gone

I have not done this, but it sounds like you need to increase your auger speed to get the pellets out into the fire pot. If the auger is too slow the pellets start burning backwards into the tube.

How is the auger speed increased?

I think 17SS nailed it...make sure the vents are clean.
Smoke coming from the hopper was the last thing I noticed before I had a hopper fire. The grill was "clean looking" but I wasn't keeping the vents clean. When they get clogged it pulls air from the hopper instead.

I had this happen recently and found it was due to the soot that had built up and blocked the vents on the back of the Bullseye lid. Cleared those and no more smoke out of the hopper.
