Pellets Burning Back through Auger

I’ve been having a consistent problem. My smoker does fantastic smoking, but the minute I take it above 275, I start to burn back into the auger as soon as it begins to cool down (when the fan kicks in). Here’s what I’ve tried to remedy:
•ensure smoker vents are clear
•clean out barrel and fire pot
•clean drip tray and grates
•remove non-factory seal
•providing additional air flow by keeping the probe hole open
•switching FROM lumberjack comp blend TO pit boss comp blend

I still seem to be having the same issues. Anyone have other trouble shooting ideas? At this point, when I have to bring the smoker to a higher temp to clean it, I have been removing all the pellets from the hoper preemptively (which, tbh is pretty obnoxious) and burning through all of the remaining pellets, then running the auger to push the ashes out and pull new pellets in after it cools down.

Help?

What non-factory seal did you remove on a Bullseye?

It’s not a bullseye. That’s the 380. 😉 Anyway, there’s a seal you can buy that goes around the edge of the lip of the lid that’s supposedly helpful. It isn’t.

I'm confused, you profile says that you have a Bullseye as grilled owned?

the only time i have had a auger fire on my 700 is when i shut it off at 500 after cooking pizza. i now set it to low 180 after hi temp cooks and shutdown when it’s below 225. never had a fire doing that.

Try closing the probe hole. Keeping it open could be feeding your fire. I had this problem a couple times on my 700, and the probe hole being open was the issue. I also had a strong breeze on those days.

A lid seal or LJ pellets are not likely to be causes.

I initially did have the probe hole closed, with the same results. I tried opening it, thinking it was perhaps a case of not enough oxygen. That didn’t help.
Also of note is that I do keep my smoker in my garage, so it isn’t exposed to the elements or weather conditions.

The fire isn’t happening when it’s cooking on high. It’s happening when I drop the temp to 200-250 to let it cool down prior to shutting down. Perhaps I didn’t explain as well as I thought. My apologies!

i have never experienced that. i would call recteq. but maybe to much ash in the firepot could cause that by raising the pellets up level with the hole? let us know what they tell you to help us out if we have a similar problem please. good luck

I will. I don’t think it could be the fire pot, because I vacuum it out after every 30ish hours of cooking. 😕 It’s good to know I’m not alone. I’ll update once I find out the issue!

Pellets too dry soak in water for 1/2 hr before use..

Just kidding please don't do that..

I would turn down to smoke for a bit before shutting down if that were happening consistently to mine. I don't take it over 250 much but when I do I try to stage the cool down before shutdown. Where there is heat.. there is fire. It's just physics and there is no way to block the pellets in this design.

I do a stage down too when I am done with my Bullseye. You would think the controller could be programed to stage down heating automatically when you turn the switch off.
