BFG auger motor in the RT-700. It's awesome!

I'm too lazy to go back and re-read 19 pages of replies, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Today I decided to clean my GrillGrates, grill racks and vacuum out the firepot. And by the way, thanks to this tread:

I picked up the recommended drywall mud pan and some PBW. That stuff works great!
But, back to my question... when removing my grates I noticed some black flakes on my drip pan. After removing the drip pan I saw my heat deflector was warped, and after removing the deflector I saw where the flakes came from. All those flakes were coming off the sides of the fire box. I'm sure all this occurred the other day when I seared those steaks after installing the 3 RPM motor and pushed the temp up near 500. First time I have ever went that high. The flakes are no big deal to me other than I can't believe RecTeq would paint the thing and not use the proper heat resistant paint. Better to leave it unpainted as to getting burnt paint flakes in your food! The question I have is if anyone else is having their heat deflector warp? I guess I will just use this as an excuse to get a Smoke Daddy. Although Recteq should cough up some of that cost or send me a new one (that would probably just warp again).

mine is warped. but it seems common even on stock grills. i plan to either reinforce mine or just build a heavy duty one. my paint is fine and i have been to 598. i do have black flakes on the inside of the grill. but its on the stainless so its just burned grease in my case. i need to scrape mine with a putty knife also.

Yes, my deflector is warped, but can be easily "popped" to a less warped state in the other direction. It needs to be made from a thicker stainless. As previously noted in other threads, it doesn't seem to adversely affect heat distribution, but does adversely affect my OCD.

The flakes you describe aren't paint but carbon flakes...a byproduct of combusted wood. My Weber charcoal grill produced this on the inside of the lid in copious amounts. A routine maintenance was to wad a piece of aluminum foil & scrub it off once in a while.

Thanks guys! I'm not letting any of this bother me as I have 2 steaks on right now and drinking a beer. Nice extreme smoke ang and then sear the $h1t out of them. I do want the Smoke Daddy stick burner deflector though!!!

Auger came today… grill grates to for free shipping!

Installing my 3rpm auger today… been reading a lot of people doing the 0-400 wings without mod, has anyone done it with mod? Any changes to times? Was planning on doing wings tonight.

PS: I ordered auger while waiting for my 700 to arrive so I only have one cook under belt so far. Thanks.

Yes there was bubble wrap and paper in the box but the motor was not in either. Lol guess UPS used the box for a football.
I’m not sure about the antics of my former nemeses at UPS, but our motor was wrapped so loosely that it was about to fall out of the bubble wrap as well.

Mine came wrapped in bubble but it wasn’t wrapped well and was barely still in bubble wrap

Okay, got my new auger motor in, Turned feed rate down to 15, appears to be taking just as long to reach 500. Do I only turn feed rate down for low smoke??

did the new motor have 3rpm printed on it? another member has a 2 rpm mailed to them by mistake. and the minimum feed rate is only ever actually having an effect when dropping temperatures or running at real low temperatures. but with a 3rpm it should be set to 15-20 or else the grill will not maintain low temperatures. if they sent the wrong motor be sure to set feed rate back to 30.

Yea it’s 3rpm. I turned it all off, will set back to 30 and turn back and see how long it takes to get to 500. I’m thinking maybe I’m supposed to only turn down to 15/20 for low cooks and keep at 30 to grill?

having the grill set to 30 will not force it to heat up faster. those numbers are only to limit the minimum feed. im not sure what all can cause a grill to heat up slower. but i know foiling the drip pan and allowing extra foil to go over the edges on the front and rear can limit air flow causing slower heating. also a really dirty firepot can limit airflow to the pellets and lower the burn temperatures. and of course the dryer your pellets the hotter they will burn.
