Folding bracket size for front shelf with competition cart

I meant more if someone is on a mobile browser of some sort of possible an app made to access the forum directly. I'm not sure how he or she is looking at it but was just trying to offer up help.

Also, you can directly link to a specific post of a thread to things quicker. There's a little "share" icon just left of the post # that you can copy and paste into another thread, email or whatever. Then you can do things like this:

Thanks @Ostrichsak. I did not know that.

That is really good to know.

@vwtdi1955 here are some pics of my Stampede front shelf if they help give you an idea for what size brackets to use. Shelf is 32 x 11-1/8 x 1 inch with 10 inch brackets. With the shelf up the gap between the rear edge to the grill body is 7/8 inch. I lower the shelf real easy so the brackets don’t scratch the cart. The marks on my shelf are reflections. The grill cover fits good. Let me know if you need any more info.

The more I look at your post #4 the more questions come up.

One of your images show "lid gasket". It is tough to see but it looks as if there is a black strip going around the lid. Is this a gasket strip? Does the 590 need this to keep it from leaking smoke? According to RecTeq " If it needed a gasket, we would have put one on it." Sorta like the Marines: "If you needed a wife we would have issued you one."

Also I am trying to figure out on the folding shelf how much workable space there is on the tray. Since the 590 is octagonal one of the edges looks to extend over the tray surface, but I can't figure out how much room I would have for a pan about three inches high for instance.

Appreciate the input.

Sorry, I missed your post yesterday. Yes I installed a lid gasket and also small pieces on the lid stops to prevent scraping. I installed them both before I did the initial burn in. Both work great. Also I have installed hi heat gasket material at the smoke vents that I got at the auto parts store. They work good too but someday I think I will seal with the red hi temp gasket material.

I don’t have a good pic showing the front octagonal edge extending over the front shelf. According to RT specs it looks like it extends 4 inches out. Hasn’t gotten in my way so far but I don’t use a pan that is three inches high.

I found the post by going to search but there is not "next" only Similar threads in my chrome browser in Windows 10. Could be a webmaster question.

I was wondering how much "usable" space you get with the wood top on your shelf. It looks as if the 10" brackets end up tucking the edge of the shelf/tray under the overhang of the RT-590. Rephrase: how big a sided pan will sit on the shelf?
I used 14" brackets and spaced the shelf (stainless shelf which is 10" deep) out 4" from the grill box surface. That puts the shelf working surface mostly out from underneath the lid handles also. I wanted to be able to put a big pan of ribs on the shelf without worrying it would tip or fall off. So the shelf starts at 4" out from the smoker box surface & front edge is 14" out. The pan I show in the picture is 13" x 21". I have put a 15" x 20" cutting board on the shelf & it is very stable.

I am assuming you had to drill a hole in the bracket to fit the existing bolt that holds the grill to the cart? I just ordered my brackets and am doing my setup like yours. Thanks for posting.

Instead of my doing the work of finding the appropriate high temp gasket material for the lid, could you let me know what you used? Do you see any smoke leaking with the gaskets in place?

Those of you out there that have not put gaskets in place: What do you see in the way of smoke leakage around the lid of the 590?

Thanx
Tom

@HAPPY1410 the RT-590 leg bolts are approximately 7/16 inch. The bracket body mount holes are 1/4 inch. So I had to ream out the top bracket hole to fit the leg bolt. On my two hole body mount bracket I only used the top hole with SS hardware. I was afraid to drill a new bottom hole in the grill body to fit the bottom bracket hole because the competition cart inner mount frame for the pellet body is real close to the lower bracket hole. RT only uses one body mount hole for their front folding shelf so I did too. It feels good and strong to me. I think the Amazon 12 inch bracket has three body mount holes

@Maule Guy I used hi temp gasket material from an auto parts store for the smoke vents. I wanted black but they only had white. Here are some threads about the Stampede's vents that might help you. For the lid gasket I used FireBlack 1/2 X 1/8 hi temp gasket (see link). I don't have any leakage from the lid or vents. Someday I might re-do the vents with either FireBlack gasket or hi temp red RTV. I think the red looks kool.

That looks really nice.

Is that an oak Stair tread? I was looking at those today and was put off by them being glued together and was wondering about how they would do in wet weather (live in Seattle). Did you seal it with something? Verathane ??

Thanx

It’s a red oak stair tread. I put 6 coats poly on it. Should be sealed pretty good. I keep it in my garage tho so it’s not out in weather.

Charles;

Thought I was being smart and ordered 14" folding brackets.....small problem they extend beyond where the comp comp cart widens. Back to the 10" as even the 12" look to extend too far down.

I do have a question. Where did you find the hooks you have on the edges of the wooden shelf? I have been to Home Depot, Lowe's and Amazon and don't see anything like those. I am assuming they don't rust.

Thanx
Tom

I got the stainless steel hooks from MSC Direct.

Hey Charles !

I saw where you said you lowered the folding shelf gently to prevent scratching the finish on the comp cart. I looked at the 4th picture in your images and saw where the release "trigger" on this folding bracket seems to have a sharp edge pointed towards the comp cart.

I am gathering all the parts for building a folding shelf like you have but was thinking of a folding bracket that has a flatter release trigger and going w/ 12" brackets if the vertical does not reach to where the comp cart sheet metal flairs out.

Something like these brackets: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M2UYPHS/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The shelf looks to not be able to lay completely flat due to the flair even with the 10" brackets. Has anyone done this w/ the 12"? If so how long was the vertical piece? Did the extra couple of inches create any issues.

I thought a 12" bracket would allow the rear of the shelf to be moved farther from the "barrel" of the 590.

Thoughts?

@Maule Guy I may put some clear RTV on my bracket release trigger to prevent scrapping the cart. Measure real close to make sure the 12" brackets aren't too long before you purchase.
