Overheating 590

I just completed my first cook on my new 590, it was a success, even my wife really liked it, and she does not eat much meat1(she went back for seconds) The problem is the grill went way over temp. I first cooked for 1 hour on extreme smoke, then kicked it up to 250 for an hour. Temps stayed perfect. Then to crisp up the chicken, bumped up to 365, temps were steady for 15 minutes, then they climbed to 397, then it stabilize there. It was fine as I wanted a crisp skin anyway, but I do not want it to climb when I am doing low and slow obviously. Everything looked fine inside the grill, temp sensor where it should be, not bent, etc. No grease fire, everything looked normal, but temp started to go a bit crazy. Anyone have any ideas before I call H.Q.? Maybe it was just a freak thing and I should try my beef ribs or brisket and monitor it closely. Don't want to ruin those, they are expensive!

No, I was keeping the lid closed. Temp held steady at 365 for 15 minutes before temps started climbing. I was in the basement workshop when my phone alerted me to the issue. The wi-fi saved my dinner.

1) Is there any possibility that the auger is stalling and it's re-lighting? Doubtful, just asking.
2) Another thought, did you compare the 590 temperature to a known reliable sensor to verify accuracy?

Chris G ——good idea to check temps with a second thermometer. Maybe temp was actually ok, but the grill readout was wrong. Don’t know if that can happen but I will check it out. Thank you!!

I’ve ‘broken in’ six recteq PID controllers now, and every one of them has done something similar on the first couple of cooks. I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere that the controllers ‘learn’ and adjust their settings accordingly, but they have behaved that way for me. Give it a little time and keep an eye on it.

FWIW, I just did the burn-in and first cook with chicken thighs yesterday. The burn-in was fine holding temps with no issues and I shut it down to wipe down the grates. About 3 hours later, I started it up to cook the chicken. The temps were fine and held at 370. When I took the chicken off, I let the grill go still set at 370. It climbed to 420 and stayed there for at least 15 minutes before I shut it down. Will keep an eye on it to see how it goes.

Mine does the same thing when I open the lid to either check or take the food off the grill. Especially since it’s been cold out lately. The grill doesn’t know the lid is open and so it tries to compensate for the sudden temp drop when the lid is open. So when you close the lid back the temp overshoots. It should settle back to your set temp after a while.

Yeah, but I only had the lid open maybe two minutes to get the food off the grates and then it was shut for at least 15 minutes after that. It didn’t do it the first time I had to open the lid to flip the chicken thighs.

I've noticed this same behavior on the Bullseye, but 700 seems rock solid.

Have you all tried calling support? Also, not sure if you are foiling your drip tray but I think I saw somewhere where if the foil overhangs the sides, it could cause air flow and heating issues. I saw a video where they recommended only covering the middle section of the drip tray and not up the sides and over, if that makes sense.

Glad your alerts are working. Some of us have experienced a glitch with ours.

EDIT: My alerts are working again.
