I’d like to put a DIY folding shelf on my stampede, but want it to lay flat against the cart when it’s down. What is the maximum size bracket I can go with to accomplish this? Thanks in advance, Keith

PS this grill is the bomb btw.

One of the things that leads to complaints about the RT offered, stainless shelf is how shallow it is at 10 inches. To my eye they did that to accommodate the shape of the comp cart and get the "lie flat" outcome you said you wanted. Based on that I'd say you need 10" or less. Of course I'm going by visual references in an image..........you apparently have the actual piece of hardware in front of you. Maybe a tape measure would be useful.

@vwtdi1955 here are some pics of my Stampede front shelf if they help give you an idea for what size brackets to use. Shelf is 32 x 11-1/8 x 1 inch with 10 inch brackets. With the shelf up the gap between the rear edge to the grill body is 7/8 inch. I lower the shelf real easy so the brackets don’t scratch the cart. The marks on my shelf are reflections. The grill cover fits good. Let me know if you need any more info.

Nice mower. I have the same one... and now the same smoker too. Great minds?

I think I may have seen you post elsewhere or I may be confusing you (I'm new here so taking in a lot of info in a very short period of time has it's downsides) with another user who posted a similar modification. Is that a basic stair step from Home Depot you did use or something else? I think I saw one person got a piece of wood from HD or similar and then routered the edges and then stained it but I'm all about minimal effort and liked the like he had as well as yours. Any details on the actual slab/surface you used?

Also, do you think that shelf would fold flat if you didn't have the cart? I don't have one and I'm not planning to add one so I think I saw that these custom shelves tend to lay flatter w/o that front panel of the cart in the way.

@Ostrichsak LOL on the great minds. Battery mowers have come a long ways. Self propelled, rear bag, and a head light. Battery last a long time too. Nice and lite for us older fellows like me with back issues. Got it several years ago after reading the reviews in Consumer Reports.

My shelf is Douglas Fir painted with Varathane Ultimate Sparurethane clear gloss from Home Depot. I got the shelf from a local lumber yard and they rounded three sides with a router, full bull nose profile. If I had to do it over again I would have used oak because I think it is prettier and stained it with something different. Another possible shelf material you could use it HDPE custom plastic cutting board. I almost used a red oak stair thread from Home Depot. And yes, the shelf would lay flat without the cart.

I have the whole EGO lineup and made the change from the Black & Decker rechargeable gear I had used for over a decade once EGO came out with the self-propelled mower & snow blower. The rest of their stuff is just as good too. Fits in nicely with our EVs and we officially don't own anything that uses gas or oil which is a pretty good feeling that none of our money is going to Middle East or Russia to fund foreign interests. I digress.

I've seen the plastic ones but I would want just black or something and all of what I saw at lower price points was crazy colors and what not. I think I like the look of wood (like yours) and it goes well with the stainless and black. I think I'm going to examine further just getting a stair tread from home depot. I need to find something that will hold up to the elements and I prefer not having to apply any stain or sealant if I can avoid it. It's cold in this area now and I'd rather have something I can install tomorrow and use rather than waiting until spring time when it's ideal to be finishing lumber.

Good luck to you and hope you post some pics.

If I didn’t already have the stainless shelf, I might have used high quality composite dock decking board. It is extremely tough, weatherproof (we have it on our saltwater dock), variety of colors, never needs refinishing, no warping, etc. just make sure there is some air gap to the grill.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I was just going to buy a pine stair tread for $10 from Home Depot to get me through the winter months and then re-evaluate in the spring when the weather is warm and I've got more options for finishing something but composite decking board may be the best final solution. Now to see if I can get the size I want/need in a color that looks good...

I am trying to find your post #21. I am liking the idea of a homebuilt shelf that is a bit wider than what the factory is offering.

Thanx
Tom

I use Chrome Browser too in my laptop. I think all the post numbers stay the same no matter what browser. Are you going to the next page? In this thread there are a total of 27 post. Post #21 is where I talk about the bracket bolts.

I found the post by going to search but there is not "next" only Similar threads in my chrome browser in Windows 10. Could be a webmaster question.

I was wondering how much "usable" space you get with the wood top on your shelf. It looks as if the 10" brackets end up tucking the edge of the shelf/tray under the overhang of the RT-590. Rephrase: how big a sided pan will sit on the shelf?

I meant more if someone is on a mobile browser vs some sort of app made to access the forum directly. I'm not sure how he or she is looking at it but was just trying to offer up help.

Also, you can directly link to a specific post of a thread to make things quicker. There's a little "share" icon just left of the post # that you can copy and paste into another thread, email or whatever. Then you can do things like this:

That is done via the little icon that looks like the two chain links. You can paste your link/url that you got from the "share" icon explained in the previous step and even edit the text to say whatever you want. I went with "Post #21" in this example but you can "click me" or anything you want in that field. I will automagically create a hyper link that displays your text with whatever link you pasted as the target.
